The temporary protected status of Haitians who have fled catastrophe caused by earthquakes in their home country has been cancelled and will expire by summer of 2019.

The Department of Homeland Security announced that the 18-month period before the expiration would allow for an “orderly transition,” giving them enough time to leave.

Elaine Duke, acting Secretary of the Department of Homeland Security, said the decision was made based on announcements that Haiti is recovering.

Records show that over 27,000 Haitian children have been born in the U.S. since TPS was adapted. They would be sent to an unfamiliar land.

Over 50,000 Haitians have lived in the U.S. since the 2010 earthquake, as reported by NPR.
