Teen Fights Transgender Discrimination with Art

Hunter Schafer, an eighteen-year-old artist who was selected as one of the Dazed 100, is fighting against transgender discrimination by creating wearable artwork.

Other artists ranked in the 2017 Dazed 100 list – the “next generation shaping youth culture for the year ahead” – include punk artist Ryan Hawaii and photographer Grace Ahlbom.

Schafer’s inspirations include David Bowie, Tim Burton, and Skottie Young, and she is driven by experimentation and self-discovery.

She transitioned at fourteen years old and has personally experienced the struggles faced by transgender individuals in the community. A particular obstacle she faced was when she was denied the basic freedom of using a public restroom that aligned with her gender identity.
