According to a new study by researchers at Florida Atlantic University, more children and youth between the ages of five and 18 have lost their lives to guns than on-duty officers and military members.

Since 1999, more than 39,000 youth have been killed by guns, with a large percentage of those children being boys and black children. Boys made up 68 percent of those killed by guns, and black children made up 41 percent.

Researchers will be publishing their findings in the American Journal of Medicine.
