In the U.S., gun violence is the second biggest cause of death among children, as reported in a recent study published in the New England Journal of Medicine.
The study found that while the number of children who are dying from firearms is increasing, it actually is happening in the home more often than anywhere else. While shootings in schools have been at the forefront of media attention, shootings in the home are the bigger culprit.
At least 85 percent of children who had died from firearms between the years of 2003 to 2013 were shot in their own home, according to the study, and nearly 2 of every 3 deaths caused by firearms in the U.S. was a suicide, as reported by The Atlantic.
A new study by researchers from North Eastern University pointed to mass shootings as a rarity, when put into the context of all shootings that end up in deaths in the U.S.
Of the 30 mass murders that happen every year in the country, approximately one takes place on a school campus, according to the study, and researchers say that school shootings are actually not more common than they were two decades ago.
Furthermore, studies have shown that mass shootings in schools K-12 “account for less than one percent of all gun violence” in the U.S. every year.
