Studies Find Housing Quality Vital to Child Development

Studies have shown that beyond malnutrition and stunting in children, poor housing conditions are the main culprit of poor child development.

Though clean drinking water and nutritious food is key for anyone and especially for children, if they are living in poor housing conditions, chances are that they will not develop properly. In one study, more than 230 children from various socioeconomic backgrounds were evaluated by researchers and the results were that those who lived in homes with running water, showers, toilets and gas cooking were better off in terms of growing and not having their growth stunted.

Meanwhile, those who grew up in housing conditions without access to these essentials were significantly underweight, and below average height.

Researchers attribute this to the fact that poor housing conditions are less hygenic, and this could lead to stunting growth.
