Spending on Prisons Exceeds Educational Spending for Taxpayers

Since 1990, local and state governments have doubled their spending on prisons and jailing, compared to spending on education.

According to the Department of Education, the national average on government spending indicates a 324% increase in spending on correctional facilities, while only a 107% increase in education between the years of 1979 to 2013. Overall, taxpayers are spending more money on correctional facilities and jailing than they are on education, Quartz reported.

The Obama administration has implemented a series of strategies to reduce incarceration in the U.S. and to develop educational opportunities for prisoners too, in an effort to reduce recidivism.
