Recycled Plastic Costs More than First-Use Plastic, Creating Barriers for a Future of Less Waste

For the first time ever, recycled plastics cost more than first-use plastic material, according to The Guardian. This could pose barriers to companies and organizations by adding additional costs.

While once upon a time recycled plastic was the more environmentally-sustainable and affordable option, it will now cost more for manufacturers. This means that many businesses will have to appreciate and recognize the long-term benefits of investing in recycled plastics in order to make a business decision to keep using recycled plastics rather than first-use plastics.

Recycled plastics now cost an extra $72 a ton, according to The Guardian and a report from S&P Global Platts.

While some places like the UK are working to incentivize the use of recycled plastic in companies, first-use plastics are becoming the more affordable option, which could pose barriers for businesses that want to be more environmentally conscious.
