Rates of poverty within rural areas has drastically increased in recent years due to a reduction of jobs in manufacturing and mining.
Unlike rates of poverty that increased in urban areas due to the recession, rural counties continue to face high unemployment rates.
According to recent reports, about one in three rural counties mark their unemployment rate at over 20 percent.
Economists found that younger generations leave rural areas once they become educated, leaving a gap in filled jobs.
“Rural America is increasingly inhabited by older and less-skilled, less educated individuals, resulting in a rising poverty rate,” explained demographer Cheryl Russell.
