Population of Elderly People Growing in US Prisons

A new report from Reuters found that the population of older people in prison has increased significantly over the last years.

Data from 2016 shows that at least 7 percent of 130,000 inmates in California’s state prisons are over the age of 60, compared to 1 percent two decades ago.

States have started responding to the increase in numbers of elderly people in prisons by creating units that offer special care. A prison in California for example will have a dementia unit.
