Number of Mountain Gorillas On the Rise Again

New data indicates that the number of mountain gorillas has increased to over 1,000 which is 25 percent increase since 2010. A group of more than 12 teams went out to parts of central Africa to count the number of gorillas living in the region by analyzing nests and genetic material.

The rise in numbers is due to an increase in protective measures including the introduction of park guards and raising awareness on their vulnerability.

Threats to mountain gorillas in central Africa haven’t disappeared and the species continues to be endangered. The greatest current threats are traps that are set up for other animals but that harm gorillas in the process and climate change, which is likely to present new challenges.
