New York Seeks to Empower Low-income Tenants on Brink of Eviction

New York City is looking to invest in providing legal services to thousands of families to help them avoid eviction and ending up in the city’s shelters.

The major argument for this investment is backed by evidence that investing thousands on legal services to prevent eviction could reduce the amount of money the city puts into shelters and costs for relocation.

Improving legal services for low-income families is just one of the strategies among many to help prevent families from ending up on the streets or in shelters. Others include outlawing landlord harassment on tenants.

The Nonprofit Quarterly reports that tenants are using “aggressive tactics” to remove low-income families from their homes to gain affluent renters as costs of living continue to rise in the city.
