New York Schools First to Integrate Mental Health Education

Starting in 2018, New York elementary, middle and high schools will be required to integrate mental health education into health courses.

Advocates of mental health say that it is important to allow youth to discuss mental health as easily as any other form of health, and starting the classroom will be an important first step.

Around the globe, at least 1 in 5 people are living with a mental health disorder, and signs of mental health disorders can be discovered as early as 14 years old, according to the Mental Health Association. Yet those who seek help are on average closer to the ages of 24 and 25.

The state of New York will have to set guidelines and it will ultimately be up to schools to implement courses and meet standards.
