Native American Struggles Depicted Through Art

An influx of artwork depicting the struggles and challenges of indigenous people are becoming prominent pieces throughout US museums.

Some galleries are showcasing photographs of and taken by Native Americans to illustrate the importance of environmentally- and socially-conscious art.

In particular, Monroe Community College’s Mercer Gallery in New York has displayed artwork of indigenous people to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

The exhibit plans to highlight current issues impacting Native Americans, including the protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline.

“We want to show people that there are ways of making change through artists’ viewpoints,” said Kathy Farrell, the museum’s gallery director.
