Sean Parker, first president of Facebook and creator of Napster, recently donated $10 million to the research lab of Jeffrey Bluestone at the University of California, San Francisco. The donation, made through his new $600-million Parker Foundation, will help find an effective cell treatment therapy for type 1 diabetes and, Parker hopes, spark interest among big pharmaceutical and biotech companies in developing drugs for autoimmune diseases.
Although the $10 million to Bluestone’s lab marks his first gift from his new foundation, Parker has made significant donations to health care in the past. In 2012, Parker pledged $5 million to Stand Up to Cancer and the Cancer Research Institute and this past June, he gave $4.5 million to a UCSF project to end malaria.
