According to a new study published in JAMA Psychiatry, the number of black patients who receive treatment for opioid addictions is dramatically lower than among white. Researchers say when it comes to treating addiction, both race and financial situations play a major role.
The study found that for every 35 patients who received treatment for opioid addiction, one black patient received treatment. Furthermore, only 19 percent of visits for treatments to opioid addictions were covered my Medicare or Medicaid, meaning the rest was done by private insurance or out of pocket.
Research shows that fewer than half of the people living with an opioid addiction, which is currently more than 2.3 million, are actually receiving treatment.
