The public hospital system in New York City are planning to increase mental health programs available for children and adolescents.

The various programs will help young patients cope and overcome numerous challenges, such as household violence, substance abuse, and poverty.

An “integrated care” model, in which children will receive access to doctors, psychiatrists, and community resources at one central location, will be implemented.

HealthySteps, Project TEACH, and the 100 Schools Project will all unite with New York City hospitals to train pediatricians and teachers in reducing cases of childhood anxiety and depression.

“We’re dealing with people with so many social issues in addition to the stressors of everyday life and health care,” said Dr. Warren Seigel, chairman of pediatrics at Coney Island Hospital.
