Researchers at the University of Washington have found that life expectancy can vary up to 20 years across counties in the U.S.

While life expectancy in America has increased to 79.1 years, researchers found the average life span in 13 counties decreased.

The report indicates that children born in areas of decreased life expectancy will most likely have even shorter lives than previous generations in those same areas.

The majority of the counties with lower life spans typically face increased rates of health issues and often contain higher residents of minority groups.

“Looking at life expectancy on a national level masks the massive differences that exist at the local level, especially in a country as diverse as the US,” said Laura Dwyer- Lindgren, a public researcher at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.
