Lack of Medical Care Causing Deaths in Immigrant Detention Centers

The Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is facing a backlash for providing insufficient medical care for those in immigrant detention.

The Community Initiatives for Visiting Immigrants in Confinement (CIVIC), an advocacy group who organizes a hotline for inmates, receives numerous complaints from inmates regarding the lack of adequate medical care within detention centers.

The CIVIC and Human Rights Watch released a new report indicating that of 30 individuals detained by ICE, 7 deaths occurred due to deficient medical care.

While ICE spends over $180 million to provide medical care for those within the immigrant detention system, inmates and researchers alike believe the funds are failing to help ailing individuals in a timely manner.

With the current administration under Trump, advocates are concerned that the medical care system within detention centers will continue to deteriorate after years of neglect.
