In the face of new restrictions on abortions in several states in the U.S., women who are seeking an abortion are now turning to buying pills from foreign suppliers and state officials are unsure that there is much they can do to stop it, as reported by Reuters.
Though the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has strict rules on distribution and use of abortion pills, pills have been purchased and used for years because there is no way to track it. But also, the option is something that more women are turning to, since in some states an abortion through a clinic is not an option any longer.
Visitation to websites that rate the safety of abortion pills has gone up to thousands of visits per day.
“It’s reasonable to expect that as states make it even more difficult for people to access clinic-based abortion care, more people will seek alternatives including self-managed abortion,” said Jill Adams, executive director of reproductive rights legal group If/When/How, as reported by Reuters.
