The Impact of California’s Wildfires on Education

Already thousands of youth are struggling with homelessness in California as the soaring costs of housing have made it nearly impossible for some students to find stable housing.

Now, with the burning fires across Northern California, hundreds more have been left without a place to call home and now without access to an education, as schools closed and some even burned down.

Additionally, hundreds of schools closed down due to heavy smoke and pollution, leaving more than 71,000 students without schools at least temporarily.

Several teachers have also lost their homes, so in addition to helping students cope with loss as they return to class, teachers will also be dealing with securing housing for themselves and coping with loss.

As some schools begin to reopen, administrative teams have decided to ease students back into classes by focusing on art projects and social activities.
