This month, Google Arts and Culture brought a once burned down museum in Brazil back to life in digital form.
After a 200-year-old museum in Brazil had burned down in September, taking with it more than 20 million historical items, or 90 percent of its entire collection, Google Arts and Culture stepped in to recreate the museum on a digital platform. Now, digital users will be able to “visit” the museum and continue to enjoy its collection.
Luckily Google had been working with the museum a few years ago to preserve its collection digitally with high resolution photography.
“Even though images cannot replace what has been lost, they offer us a way to remember,” said program manager, Chance Coughenour. In the meantime the initiative will help patrons continue to learn about its history through photos and Brazil will be investing in rebuilding the actual structure.
