According to a new report, families that adopt high-needs or troubled children often receive inconsistent and minimal financial support from state programs.
In particular, the study found that Colorado families receive little assistance and information from state programs regarding potential adoptions.
Furthermore, parents who adopt report receiving less financial support compared to foster parents.
“We’re talking about finding permanent homes for children and more importantly, we want those children to stay in those homes,” said Stephanie Villafuerte, the study’s lead researcher.
Officials in Colorado are exploring different tactics to support families who plan to adopt special-needs children.
