Under the proposed budget for 2018, the CCAMPIS childcare subsidy that currently supports more than one million parent-students across US colleges, would be removed.

According to a report from the Institute of Women’s Policy Research, more than 4 million students in U.S. colleges are balancing school work while taking care of their children. The data indicates that no more than 31 percent of single mothers older than the age of 25 have college degrees and many of these student-parents barely have time to work outside of taking classes and caring for their children.

Nearly 100 percent of parent-students who rely on CCAMPIS would not be able to afford going to school if it weren’t for the subsidy, according to data collected through CCAMPIS.

The current annual budget for CCAMPIS has been $15M and reaches 80 percent of universities across the US.

A spokesperson from the Department of Education said in an email that funding for CCAMPIS is not included in the President’s Fiscal Year 2018 Budget,” as reported by PSMAG.
