Free Preschool Initiative Spurs Controversy

New York City mayor Bill de Blasio unveiled a new initiative to offer free pre-schooling to every 3-year-old, but his new program has begun to face backlash.

James Matison, the executive director of the nonprofit Brooklyn Kindergarten Society, claims the mayor’s proposal, entitled “3-K for All,” could cause teachers to leave his preschools and join city-run schools that offer higher salaries.

De Blasio’s previous preschool program enrolled nearly 70,000 4-year-olds, but critics of the mayor’s new plan cite that providing 3-year-olds with free education can populate already crowded facilities.

Freddi Goldstein, a spokeswoman for the mayor, argues that children will greatly benefit from the new program.

“The science is clear that the earlier we reach our youngest children, the better chance they have to succeed later in life,” she stated.
