Foundations Invest in Diversity in U.S. Art Museums

The Ford Foundation and Walton Family Museum announced that they are jointly investing in diversification at art museums through a new $6M project, entitled the Diversifying Art Museum Leadership Initiative.

The initiative will help fund more than 20 art institutions across the U.S.

The ultimate goal of the initiative is to improve and achieve diversity in higher ranks of leadership at art museums, by increasing diversity to 30 percent in senior management.

Among the museums that will receive grants are the LACMA and the Saint Louis Art Museum.

A 2015 study showed that museum leadership is mostly caucasian, and non-white staff make up positions like security guards.
