The Florida House is proposing over $160M in budget cuts for higher education institutions.
A plan proposed by the House Higher Education Appropriations Subcommittee outlined a $110M cut to universities, and $61M in reductions to state colleges. The proposal suggests increases in education programs for private colleges and workforce education, however.
Chairman Larry Ahern maintained that higher education was bound to see changes in its budget and that the funds will be redirected for other state needs.
The budget proposal is largely a result of skepticism over increased university spending on foundations and staff.
The budget cuts would “eliminate the use of state funds to pay the salaries of foundation employees, which amounted to about $53 million for universities and $9.8 million for state colleges in the current year,” reported Palm Beach Post.
The new budget would also reduce scholarship funds distributed by the Bright Futures merit scholarship program by over $11M.
