Detroit Public Schools Community District Officially Positions Itself as Sanctuary for Immigrant Students, Families

The Detroit Public Schools Community District has officially established itself as a sanctuary for immigrant students to help bring more peace and reassurance to students and their families.

Though Detroit does not have a large population of immigrants compared to other states in the U.S., there are still many families that are anxious in the face of ICE raids that have been carried out in other parts of the country and that have resulted in the separation of families.

Education leaders say that students had missed school for several days because they were scared. Though ICE officials said they had no plans to carry out raids in Michigan, the district’s official stance would bar government officials from going into schools and from asking for information on students.

“We stand with our students, parents and their communities,” said Angela Reyes, Executive Director of the Detroit Hispanic Development Corporation, as reported by NBC News.
