The state of Virginia set a precedent for other US states by making computer science a mandatory requirement for students.
Virginia’s Board of Education established a framework for teachers in conveying computer science material to students, a requirement that is hoped to eventually become implemented in other states.
“We’re clearly leading the nation, and that puts an extra burden on us to get it right,” said member of the Virginia State Board of Education and former state education secretary Anne Holton.
The integration of computer science will teach Virginia students a variety of technology skills, particularly coding, that are receiving national attention.
Virginia’s new requirement follows the current government administration’s plan to devote $200 million annually for computer science programs.
