Companies Take on Recycling of Ocean Waste

Global plastic production increases when oil prices drop, often because “it’s cheaper to make new petroleum-based plastic goods” than recycling old items into new ones, report Grist.

A recent study showed that recycling rates around the globe are low, about 9 percent worldwide.

In the midst of it all, however, some companies have taken up recycling marine debris into items such as skateboards, sunglasses, shoes, jewelry, and even clothing.

One example is a partnership between Adidas sportswear and Parley for the Oceans, a conservation organization.

Experts say, however, that while upcycled products are a great way to raise awareness on the issue of pollution and waste in the ocean, there should be greater focus on finding sustainable solutions to replace the use of plastic in the first place.
