A new report from the Children’s Defense Fund unveiled that more than 13 million children in the U.S. live in households with incomes below the poverty line, and two-thirds of those children are minorities.
No child should have to worry where her next meal will come from or whether she will have a place to sleep each night in the wealthiest nation on Earth. Yet more than 12.8 million children in America – about one in five – live in poverty and face these harsh realities every day,” according to the report titled Ending Child Poverty Now.
The organization is calling on more to be done to help eliminate poverty in order to prevent it from negatively impacting the lives of children for years to come.
Leaders of the organization said that we already have all that we need to eliminate poverty, and now it’s about “investing in them and expanding them.”
Experts now suggest doubling the federal minimum wage to $15, increasing tax credits and widen childcare subsidies, which they estimate would eliminate half of child poverty in America.
The estimated cost of doing so is $52 billion, according to the report.
