Children in Virginia Increasingly Affected By Poverty as Budget Cuts Impact Food Assistance Programs

Children in the state of Virginia are increasingly affected by poverty, according to research from the Commonwealth Institute.

Leaders of the institute say that welfare cuts lead to families that face obstacles in providing essentials for their children, and ultimately this affects a child’s right to obtain an education and becoming a contributing member to society.

Budgets cuts often target welfare programs such as the Temporary Assistance to Needy Families program, which provides much of Virginia’s low-income families with supplemental income to afford essentials.

The Commonwealth Institute has taken steps to urge policymakers to reinvest in low-income families through assistance programs like TANF.
