A new report from the Metropolitan Planning Council found that Latino and African American families are particularly struggling with low wages in Chicago.
Minimum wage rates are at $12 per hour as of July 2018, but families will still struggle to make ends meet, even with the dollar raise.
The analysis used data from 2016 and found that more than 70 percent of African American families living in Chicago were not making “livable wages” which is defined as a wage with which a family can afford food, rent, taxes, transportation and other essentials.
The analysis estimated that individuals need to make at least $13.05 per hour to achieve a livable wage in the city, and those numbers double with every child in the family.
