California leaders are uncertain of how to spend next year’s allocated funding for special education, with many arguing that the funds will not be distributed evenly, and when they are distributed, schools will get to spend the money however they want.
This could leave out certain students or could lead to spending money in ways that are not the most effective and helpful to meet California’s special education students’ needs.
Governor Newsom had proposed increasing funding for special education to $696 million – one of the largest increases in funding for special education in decades.
How that money will be spent, however, is the greater debate, with some lawmakers proposing that the money be used for students with disabilities in preschool, since they currently do not receive state funding, according to Ed Source.
