Though many US families are struggling to make ends meet, only few actually qualify for government programs that are intended to aid low-income families.

For different ages and family sizes there are certain limits on how much a family can make to be considered “poor” by U.S. standards.

For example, a senior over 65 would have to make less than $13,000 to be considered impoverished – an astounding number given how expensive housing can be. A family of four with two children would have to make under $25,000.

Our government’s official definition of poverty has very little to do with the day-to-day lived experiences of many Americans,” says Jeremy Rosen, director of economic justice at Shriver Center on Poverty Law in Chicago, as reported by US News.
