A new report from One Campaign estimates that about 130 million girls around the globe fail to attend school every day of the year.
In South Sudan, about three-fourths of girls go without attending primary school and without an education at all. In Central Africa Republic, there is one teacher for about every 80 students and literacy for young women in Niger is at about 17 percent total.
The campaign writes that “nowhere in the world do women have as many opportunities as men,” noting that in many countries as many as twice the number of girls are without opportunities in education compared to boys.
Living without an education increases risk of poverty and for women who can have children this is particularly troublesome because it creates a cycle of poverty for their children as well.
“This is not just about getting more girls into school, it’s about the women they grow up to be: educated, empowered and employed,” says Gayle Smith, President of One Campaign.
