How can we sensitively and adequately address teen suicide?

One show has taken what critics are calling, a “glamorized” approach to the issue, and has more or less ignored mental illness and “the reality of what happens after death.”

13 Reasons Why centers on the suicide of a female high school student and has faced backlash for failing to illuminate the consequences of teen suicuide for families, communities, and the public’s overall understanding of the issue and how to properly support teenagers.

Despite its criticism, the show has also received positive feedback for the ways in which it accurately presents the prevalence of sexual violence amongst teenagers.

Supporters of the show point to its depictions of rape and violent masculinity as ways to spread awareness of issues that are often overlooked amongst teenagers.
